![]() I was walking through the town centre this morning when I saw a notice that had been pinned on the wall outside a building. It read, “Mustard Tree - open for business as usual; resources for the homeless and the marginalised.” And I thought to myself what a title to give a group of people! It made me realise that we are all labelled in some way, old age pensioners, refugees, senior citizens, the youth of today, ‘chavs,’ transgendered and gay; not forgetting religious labels and the easier male or female category. The list goes on and on but what must it be like to be put into a category known as, ‘the marginalised.’ First, what actually does it mean? I looked it up in the dictionary and it said, “Social exclusion (or marginalization) is social disadvantage and relegation to the fringe of society.” Does this make it any clearer? Do you know whether you are marginalised or not? Who tells you? How do you find out? My head began to hurt with the worry of this and then I thought; with the other labels, you know where you stand straight away. And then I thought; God forbid you were a gay, senior citizen refugee, who was homeless as well as being marginalised. And then I didn’t think anything else as my head exploded! Thought for the day: Just be yourself!
